"A negro whose name we have been unable to learn, killed a white man named Perry near Newbern on Wednesday night. He stole a mule from a neighboring farmer the same night and made his escape. Another negro, who is supposed to be implicated in the murder has been arrested.
There seems to be almost a carnival of crime in our section of late, and murders are becoming alarmingly frequent. Lawlessness is, however, a natural result of the present political and social situation, and we have reason to be grateful that the hellish teachings of radical emissaries have not been more fruitful of murder, rapine, and incendierism. It is not for the lack of effort on their part."
