"The Demopolis Era of 2nd inst., gives an account of a negro man name Allen Owens, of Greene county, who unfortunately 'run agin' a shotgun. On Wednesday evening, Allen Owens killed a beef in the swamp, (about three miles from Demopolis,) belonging to Mr. Robert Phillps, and between that time and dark, the beef was found by a freed man. Mr. P. then got two white men and three negroes, to go with him for the purpose of finding the guilty parties; it was only a short time, after they had concealed themselves near the carcass, before two negroes, Allen Owen and another (name unknown) came with a cart to carry off their spoils; and as Allen approached the beef, one of the gentlemen fired at him, the shot taking effect in his arm and abdomen, inflicting a mortal wound from which he died the following Friday. His accomplice becoming alarmed ran off. He was fired at twice, but being quick motioned and not liking the 'situation,' succeeded in making his escape.
The Era says, that stealing is being carried to such an extent that unless something is done to protect a man in his property, we might as well quit trying to make anything to subsist upon."
