""Major Pierce, of the Freedman's Bureau will be retained at Demopolis.""

The above was telegraphed from Montgomery, by Dr. Jones—who was commissioned to bear a large petition to Gen'l Swayne praying for the retention of Major Pearce at this place.
All the people hereabouts—white and colored—were clamorous when they heard of a probability of his removal. A man who will act justly and generously and who exhibits in his private life the characteristics of a gentleman will never fail to obtain the respect of our community."
