"We learn from the Marion Commonwealth that Harvey McCann's wife has recently brought suit against Perry county for $5000 for the muder of her husband by disguised men, last year sometime. It is known by many citizens of this county that Harvey McCann was killed, or rather mortally wounded, by men of his own race, whether they were disguised or not, we are not prepared to say. The origin of the affair was about as follows: Harvey McCann whipped the child of another negro, for some cause or other, when he and the father of the child had some difficulty, in which Harvey killed him. Shortly after this, Harvey was killed, and it was generally understood here that he was killed by negroes who came all the way from Montgomery to do the job. Perry county is surely not to be held responsible for this affair. "
