"One night last week, Mr. Bowden, who attends to business for Mr. Willis Miree, at the "Richardson Place," three miles south of Marion, walking out after supper, discovered a wagon and mules standing at his crib door. He immediately returned to the house and informed Mr. Miree of what was going on. Mr. Miree took his fire-arms and went out to see what was the matter. Two negroes were on the inside of the crib filling up the wagon with corn. As soon, however, as Mr. M was discovered, the driver mounted the saddle mule and drove off; Mr. M ordered him to stop, but he paid no attention whatever to the order. By this time, the wagon was out of reach of Mr. Miree. He made a negro bridle his horse, pursued and overtook the negro and wagon some distance beyond Captain Reese's place and again ordered him to stop, and failing to comply, Mr. M fired upon him, the ball passing through the front part of the negro's bowels, which caused him to stop the wagon, but the negro crawled into the bushes or hedge by the roadside, and thereby eluded detection until after Mr. M had carried the wagon and corn back to his house; where search was instituted for the negro, and he was found a short distance from where he fell from the mule. Mr. M took the corn-thief in charge, who is now under medical treatment. We have but on complaint to make against Mr. Miree, and that is, that he did not kill the rascal. "
