"Having copied, in our last week’s issue an article from the Uniontown Press concerning the homicide that recently occurred in that town, we feel that it is simply an act of justice to re-produce the following communication, from the same paper:

In last week’s paper appeared an article or communication relative to the difficulty which occurred here on the 13th inst., in which my son was killed. That article charges that my son on the day previous to the shooting, went to Mr. Nordlinger’s store armed with a wagon standard with which he threatened to strike Mr. Williamson; it further charges that he went back armed with pistol, insulted Mr. W by calling him a damn lie and fired at him. There are some things that people cannot believe, and I am satisfied that there is not a man, woman or child in this community who honestly believes the statement made to you. My lamented son was my oldest child, and from the day he first lisped his mother’s name till the day of his death, I never knew of his making an oath, and for any one to say he used such, is adding insult to injury. That article further states that Mr. Williamson was perfectly justifiable and that they were satisfied that a sworn jury would so decide.

This is a premature judgment of the case which in my opinion is made to influence the coming court. My son received a death shot before he produced a pistol, and if a sworn jury will decide that the slayer of my first born was justifiable under such circumstances, the sooner I find it out the better. It further states the colored people does not sanction my son’s course. In this too you have been misinformed. I am an old citizen of this place. My children were all born and reared here. I have always tried to inculcate in their minds principles of truth, justice and peace. In my sore bereavement, I have tried to bear myself aright, but should I allow these misstatements to go by without correction, I would be unworthy of my worthy boy. I am willing to adopt as my rule of action, the Divine command, “Do unto others as you would that they should do to you,” and only ask that others follow the same rule.

RICHARD HUDSON."
