“Forkland, ALA., June 8th, 1877. EDITOR WHIG AND OBSERVER: Dear Sir - Our community was somewhat startled on the 80th ult., by hearing that a negro (by name Walker Hines) had been killed by John H. Smith, formerly of our counts, but now of St. Clair. Mr. N. A. Glover, Notary Public and Ex-Officio Justice of the Peace, immediately caused a jury of inquest to be summoned, which repaired to the place where the killing took place.- Mr. Smith came forward and delivered him- self up to the officers, and had a searching preliminary examination, when the evidence adduced by all the witnesses showed clearly that acted in self-defence. The community justified Mr. Smith in all he did.”
