Lucy, Tennessee, 1847 Elk Mills Oct 19/47
T. M. Parish Esq
Dear sir Yours in relation to the negro Lucy is before me - You may have her for what I owe you if it is as much as five hundred dollars. I have no opportunity of knowing the exact amount as my books are in Orleans, I have just [received] a letter from Mr Branham who informs me that she is much better.
Should you conclude to take her you will please inform me immediately. I shall write to Mr Branham to deliver her to your order - which you may send at once.
I have a pretty large debt to pay which will take some years if able at all = our property here has cost 35,000$ and you know I had but little to begin with - we are able to make the payment now due and may by hard work and strict economy meet others as they become due.
We are all well and busy as we can be we all wish you success and hope by aid of friends and your own exertions you may get through and do not doubt you will. We could not borrow 25$ if we were to try as the people are too poor and have no money to lend Please let me hear from you at once Give [Nannys?] and my love to Cousin Mary.
