Set against the tumultuous backdrop of the English Civil Wars, expanding transatlantic slave trade, and settler colonialism in the Americas, Behn\u2019s work engages with frankness and complexity a range of topics, from gender identity to political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This podcast celebrates the 350th anniversary of the first public performance of a work by Behn, surveying major trends across translations of romances and scientific texts, timely plays, erotic poetry, and an anti-slavery novella. Researched, written, and produced by University of Alabama undergraduates during the coronavirus global pandemic in the spring of 2021, this limited series provides the public with a primer to one of the most influential writers in English you\u2019ve never heard of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">NB: This project was featured as part of the National Humanities Alliance&#8217;s <em>Humanities for All <\/em>series, &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/humanitiesforall.org\/blog\/making-the-covert-public\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/humanitiesforall.org\/blog\/making-the-covert-public\" target=\"_blank\">Making the Covert Public<\/a>&#8221; (15 June 2021), and in <a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.mla.hcommons.org\/core-spotlight-making-the-covert-public-by-elizabeth-e-tavares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a post<\/a> for the Modern Language Association&#8217;s blog, <em>The Wire<\/em> (3 August 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background is-style-twentytwentyone-separator-thick\" style=\"background-color:#820a3a;color:#820a3a\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"warning\">Content warnings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The timeliness and meaningful stakes of Behn&#8217;s work means that some of the content in these episodes merit notice, as they occasionally include descriptions of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>racial caricatures, epithets, slurs, bigotry, and other hate speech.<\/li><li>rape, sexual assault, and harassment.<\/li><li>graphic, explicit violence, including toward women and people of color.<\/li><li>self-harm, suicide, and suicidal thoughts.<\/li><li>graphic, violent death, including genocide.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Notifying audiences of content warnings is considered <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.mica.edu\/files\/resources\/content-warning-best-practices-7-18.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/assets.mica.edu\/files\/resources\/content-warning-best-practices-7-18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a best practice in the classroom<\/a> as well as in journalistic settings, enabling listeners to martial their resources to engage with rather than be caught off guard and potentially harmed by sensitive content.
