Description

From the Alabama Department of Archives and History Governor A. B. Moore Collection. A remitment from Governor Andrew B. Moore requesting executive clemency for Gromwelle to the Executive Department. A petition from citizens of Montegomery County requesting for the commendation of a ligher sentence for Gromwelle is attached to the remitment. The support for the commendation S.D. Hale and P.F. Sayre is attached to the petition.

Upon the recommendation of the Judge who presided at the [hive?] of [s]job[/s] Gromwelle a slave who was convicted of the murder of Jon O [Hovs?], of the last term of the circuit court of Montgomery County and sentenced to be hung on the day of morale work, and also [cifoore?] the petitioners of the [sentencer?] who prose-cuted the above Gromwelle and few of the jury who convicted him. His punishment [scribble] commuted and instead of hanging him the sheriff is [required?] to brand him on the left hand with ^the^ little “u” and cuffed one hundred lashes upon the naked back of said slave. This commute [wu?] [scribble] granted upon our desire that the owner of said slave promises + agrees to take said slave out of the state [trashcan?] [hey?] day and the sheriff is directed to keep him custody until his owner is ready to take hime away who must payto the jailor his fees for [respng?] <s>huu</s> said slave
