To His Excellency Gov. A B Moore,
Dear sir:
Accompanying this you will find certificate of [Jr. Morm?] physician to this Penitentiary, + also a petition signed by [Eleanu?] of this person who tried Randolph Gray, as also by a layr number of citizens. I defended this case, and remember that this testimony was of conflicting character. His deft was a meek youth scared 18 year old at the time of the unfortunate difficulty. This killing took place in a [rowdy?] house + this testimony on which he was convicted come [from?] rich house. His deft was confined in jail about three years before his trial, he being poor [tak-ing?] poor relations could not give any bail. He has none [beu?] in the penitentiary over two years. [Re;?] sentence was five years. I think his case is a fit one for the interpretation of Executive clemency. In what the physician says, look at the time he has already been in prison - over seven years. I have not in this case the ordinary feeling of a criminal who has red a fee for his devices - His [family?] man was poor, unable to [euflay?] [ceunnl?] but [jisand?] my devices the case feels granted - these received no fee.
Respectfully,
N. A. Watts
