Dear Sir

At the fall term of the circuit court of this county ^1852 lone* B W Huntington* presiding* and __ Daniel Coggin* [[Solicitor|Solicitor]]* (page break) one Sweat* was tried on a charge of and convicted of [[Murder|murder]] in the 2nd degree and by the [[Judges|Judge]] sentenced --- to fifteen years (15ys) imprisonment in the penitentiary- I assisted in his defense. I believed then and still think that he was only guilty of manslaughter in the 1st degree, A Y* Sane* Eqr* who assisted in the defense* prosecution requested me this morning as he was leaving to unite you requesting you pardon him as he thinks he is sufficiently punished indeed it is ^always the unanimous opinion of the people of this county that he ought to be (over)

Be released. A petition in his behalf has already been signed by between 3&600 people(crossed out) citizens of this Co-lapiny* that your Excellency may feel authorized* to release him ___ leave to subscribe myself your Excellency obdt Servant
