To the Honorable [[Moore, Andrew B. (Andrew Barry), 1807-1873|Andrew B. Moore]] Governor of the state of Alabama,
The undersigned petitioners, citizens of [Benton County (Ala.)|Benton County]], would most respectfully ask that you exercise your clemency in releasing [[Sims, Ephraim C|Ephraim C Sims]] from the [[Jails|jail]] of this county for the following reasons which we know to be true. At the fall term of the Circuit Court, the said Sims was fined $100 for an assault & battery. (The proof showed only a common fight only one witness being examined, & he the prosecutor) The said Sims being a [[Impoverished people|poor man]] was unable to pay the fine & costs and in default of the pay must thereof was sentenced to [[Jails|jail]] for three months which imprisonment he is now undergoing.
Other [[Prisoners|prisoners]] to the number of five are now in jail, ___ Larkin* Bramlett under sentence of death for the murder of ___, Willis Todd* on charge of murder being removed from the jail of [[Cherokee County(Ala.)|Cherokee County]] for safe keeping, the others for minor offences.
Bramlett* and Todd* have been making systematic efforts to escape and had actually succeeded in procuring* a watch spring saw, a pike*, a butcher knife, and other tools for effecting this purpose and had it not been for the timely warning of the [[Sheriffs|sheriff]] by said Sims* they would

have succeeded in effecting this escape. Bramlett and Todd* __ in their wrath* that if Sims divulged their plans they would kill him, but two days ago when they had ___ their tools Sims had the moral courage to face them and in presence of the sheriff tell where all these tools were concealed and actually went among their clothing and in the __ of the jail found the tools & handed them over to the sheriff.
We have no personal feeling in the matter but respectfully ask in view of the facts that your excellency grant us this request and as in* duty* bound will __ pray*.
