The undersigned respectfully represent to your Excellency that they are the securities of one [[Connel, Henderson|Henderson Connel]] (now dec<sup>d</sup>) for the fines & costs in two cases in which the said Henderson was convicted [[Convicted|conviction]] at the last term of the circuit court[[Circuit couts|circuit court]] of [[Shelby County (Ala.)|County of Shelby]] Alabama on charges of assault & battery[[Assault and battery]], one of said fines $50.—& the other $1.— & the cost in each case about $40.— and that said Henderson Connel departed this life about the 9<sup>th</sup> of November last leaving a [[Widdows|widow]] & some 6 or 7 small children the oldest about 10 or 12 years of age & no more property within our knowledge than the law exempts from execution & inasmuch as the punishment designed to be inflicted by the imposition of fine & cost cannot <u>now</u> in this case be visited upon the said Henderson but must fall within whom his securities or his widow & children who are all innocent in the violation of the law for which said fines & costs were imposed & the said widow & children almost pennyless[[impoverished people|destitute]] & helpless on account of their age & conditions we appeal with confidence to your Excellency & ask that you will in the executive clemency [entrusted?] to your [devention?] remit said fines, deeming the costs in said cases <u>under</u> <u>the</u> <u>circumstances</u> an ample atonement to the violated law in the premises.
