Mr. [Solemon?] Sept 19 th 1859
[[Herndon, Thomas H. (Thomas Hood), 1828-1883|Thos. H. Herndon]] Esq.
Dr Sir
Since the conver-sation I had with you at [[Judges|judge]] olivers in Refference to the fines of Mr. Raynes I have seen Mr. R—and he spoke to me on the subject, from his statement of the matter I have no doubt his statements are correct, which you are already in possession of—and in view of the hostile feeling that I know Mr. Morgan Entertains toward him and In being a man (confidentially-speaking) who, veracity from his general dessert-ment I cannot recommend—under all the circumstances—I need only say that as one of the citizens of this [[Greene County (Ala.)|County]] and neighborhood—
[page break]
that I cordially recommend his case to the [[Clemency|clemency]] of The [[Moore, Andrew B. (Andrew Barry), 1807-1873|Governor]]—from the fact that do not look upon Mr. Raynes as being a man that would <u>willfully</u> and knowingly violate the law—as charged in those cases
Respectfully your friend
Josiah Collins
