Description
From the Alabama Department of Archives and History Governor A. B. Moore collection. Letter written to Governor A. B. Moore from B. T. Pope asking if Judge Mudd's letter of clemency request for George Russell (whom was accused and tried for murder in Blount County) had arrived to the Governor's desk. Pope reiterates the widely held belief that Russell's sentence should be commuted so he is not executed.

Dear [[Moore, Andrew B. (Andrew Barry), 1807-1873|Governor]]—
I sent [[Mudd, W. S. (William Swearingen), 1816-1884|Judge Mudds]] recommendation of the [[Communting--Law and legislation|commutation]] of the punishment of [[Russell, George|George Russel]] [[Convicted|convicted]] of [[Murder|murder]] in the first-degree sentenced to be [[Capital punishment|hung]] by the last [[Circuit Courts|Circuit Court]] of Blount Co. and affermed by the [[Alabama. Supreme Court|Supreme Court]], or-dering the sentence to be executed on the 13th of April next from [[Elyton (Birmingham, Ala.)|Elyton]] two weeks ago—and as I have not heard of its safe arrival [I?] write again to say it was sent & to ask that a copy of the com-mutation may be sent to me <u>here</u>. as the time is growing short & the mails very uncertain—
[page break]
I will remain here at least till next Tuesday (the 22nd) & will go from here to Blount—
Judge Mudd joins me in expressing the hope that nothing will prevent the Commutation from reaching the proper offices in time and as evidence of this I get him to sign this with me [as?] I told him of your assurance that <u>his</u> re-commendation would be favora-bly acted on, even in the absence of any other action by the friends of the [[Prisoners|Prisoner]]
with the highest regard
I remain Yours sincerely
B. T. Pope
