LaFayette Ala. Feby 23rd 1864

His Excelency Thomas H. Watts
Governor of the State of Ala

Sir a day or two since I received
a notice from John R. Alford of this coun
ty to have an able bodied negro man at
Cusseta ^2 March next^ with three days provisions to go
to Mobile to work on the fortifications for
60 days Mr Alford styles himself impress
-ing agent for Chambers County by order
of Col Blount Will you be so good, as to
inform me by what authority Col. Blount
makes the call or requisition upon me and
by what authority he has appoint Mr
Alford impressing Agent. I was called
upon on Decr 1862 by the State to send a
negro man to Mobile to work on the
fortifications I sent a negro I was called
upon by the order of Gen. Maury to send
last Oct for same purpose I sent an able
man about 28 years old he came home
sick about 1st Decr last The Dr who attended
expected him to die for several days he
went to the plantation to work the
first time on 11th of this month I have
been informed that some persons in this
county who own several slaves have
never been called upon to send one
to Mobile or elsewhere I believe the
call upon me purpurporting to be
by the order of Col. Blount to be with
-out authority of law I also believe the
call purporting to have been made last
Oct by Gen. Maury was without authority
of law I am and have always been
willing and ready to do all in my
power to aid in establishing the
Independence of the Confederate
States I have been confined to my
room and generally to my bed for
the rise of these three years and I write
this upon my bed Please give me
upon the reception of this the
much desired information.

Most respectfully
T M Allison
