Description

In the letter, T. F. Samuel, the sheriff of Tuscalosoa County, wants to keep one deputy in the town as part of conscription exemptions. The Confederate Impressment Act now required that the governor approve the exemption of a deputy and Samuel notes he's getting "trouble" from "the military at this place."

Tuscaloosa March 15th 1864
To His Excellency
Thos. H. Watts Governor +c,
Dr Sir
I received your letter
a few days since, informing me that I am exempt
under the law from Military Service, and that if
necessary to the discharge of the duties of the office,
under special application, the Deputy will also be
exempted.
I have made affidavit which is herewith
enclosed, setting forth the fact that it is necessary to
the discharge of the duties of the office that I be allowed
to have and keep one Deputy. I hope your Excellency
will send me as early as convenient, such a showing
for his Exemption as will prevent his being taken
up by the military authority.
I have had some trouble
with the military at this place, they have on several
occasions had both myself and Deputy before them,
and up to this time they have yielded to the statute of
the state and allowed me to have on deputy. But as
the late act of Congress refers this matter ^to^ the Governor
of the State, I desire that you Excellency will settle the
matter, and this prevent any further trouble on the
part of the Military Authority.
Very Respcly
Your obt Svt
T F Samuel, shff.

Tuskaloosa County
T. F. Samuel
Sheriff Tuscaloosa
