From the Alabama Department of Archives and History Governor A. B. Moore Collection. Transcribed copy of a letter from State Treasurer D. B. Graham to Thomas E. Herbert, a reveiver of public money in Greenville, Alabama. Graham requests financial statements for public funds in Herbert's possession on Alabama's date of secession, as well as public funds that Herbert received since that date.

"Treasurer's Office April 6th 1861

"Sir

I enclose herewith for your information a copy of "an ordinance in relation to the waste and inappropriated lands in the State of Alabama" approved March 20th 1861. By the second section of said ordinance you will perceive that the Receivers of public money at the several land offices in this state as established under the acts of the Congress of the United States in force previous to the 11th Jany 1861 are instructed and required to retain all sums of money paid into their hands as such receivers previous to and since the 11th day of Jany 1861 and to hold the same subject to

the order of the Treasurer of the state."

I have therefore to request that you make out and transmit to this office a statement showing the amount of public money in your hands on the 11th Jany 1861; and separate monthly statements of all sums that may have been received by you since that time and that you deposite in the state Treasury in the same description of funds in which the same was received by you all sums of money in your hands as Receiver on the 11th Jany 1861 and since that time as shown therein, as required by said ordinance without unnecessary delay, for which service a reasonable compensation will be allowed by the Commissioner
