Greenville, Alabama: 18 December 1860.
To His Excellency
governor Moore.
Sir,
The undersigned, a Committee, appointed at a Meeting composed of a Class of gentlemen, representing, to a considerable extent, the Commercial and Agricultural interests of Butler County, have the honor of transmitting to you, under the instructions of that meeting, the enclosed Resolutions.
Hoping they may be found to correspond with your own views of public policy, We are, with very great Consideration, Your obt. servts.
Sam'l: Adams - Joseph Thames, Benj. F. Porter. A. F. Posey, R. W. Hollowman - C. C. Lloyd, H. M. Caldwell. Dan'l. G. Dunklin, Saml. F. Gafford - Randolph Owen,
Resolved - That it is the sense of the People here assembled, that the present embarrassed condition of the Finances of the County, demands immediate and vigorous Legislative interposition.
Resolved - That the fact that, the Legislatures of the other Southern States are in Session, and have generally authorized the suspension of Specie Payments, requires that our own Banks be as soon as possible relieved by the authority of the Legislature from the penaltie, interposed against this measure. That a failure to do so will either make our Banks the victims of the distressed condition of the times, or cause our people to sink under the extraordinary pressure, resulting from the unexampled withdrawal of a circulation adequate to the representation of their labor and products.
Resolved - That the present Financial distress, is not the result of extravagance or over trading, but of a great political juncture, alike affecting every interest: and therefore
the more loudly demanding Legislative interposition.
Resolved - That in view of the state of affairs in the particulars mentioned, the Governor is hereby respectfully, but most anxiously urged to call the Legislature together, at the earliest possible moment that the public interest will authorize; in order that the sovereignty of the State may take such action in respect to the crisis as will restore confidence, elevate the Banking credit of the State, enable them to extend their circulation, and relieve the people, so far as justice to creditors, and a prudent policy, will authorise.
Resolved - That the meeting of the Legislature ought not to be deferred, so far as the purposes of these Resolutions are concerned, until after the assembling of the Convention. That to delay it; action thus, would be calculated to embarass or subject, demanding immediate, independent action, with possibly, the consideration
of that of the reorganization of the political Department of the State under circumstances calling for the undivided, and most solemn deliberation of the Legislature
John K. Henry, Chairman.
David B. Palmer, Secretary.
