THE STATE OF ALABAMA, And by Authority of the Same. Andrew B Moore GOVERNOR AND COMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMY AND NAVY. To WM A Clemens GREETING:
WHEREAS you have been elected 3rd Lieutenant of the Guards of the Sunny South in the County of Lowndes composing a part of "The Volunteer Corps of the State of Alabama," under the provisions of "An Act to provide for an efficient Military Organization of the State of Alabama," approved February 24th, 1860, reposing special trust and confidence in your patriotism, valor, fidelity and ability, I do by these presents commission you to take rank agreeably to law. You will carefully and diligently perform the duties of 3rd Lieutenant by doing and performing all manner of things thereto belonging.
You will observe and follow such orders as you shall, from time to time, receive from the Governor of this State, for the time being, and his successors in office, and from other superior officers, according to military rules and discipline; and all inferior officers and soldiers are enjoined to obey you in your cap[acity]
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the Great Seal of the State to be affixed, at the City of Montgomery, this 3rd day of December A. D. 1860 and the Independence of the United States, the eighty fifth year.
