To his Excellency [[Moore, Andrew B. (Andrew Barry), 1807-1873|A B Moore]] Governor of the State of Alabama
Your Petitioner [[Russell, George|George Russel]] humbly represents to your Excellency that he was [[Convicted|convicted]] of [[Murder|Murder]] in the first degree with the [[Capital punishment|death penalty]] at the last Term (Fall Term 1858) of the [[Circuit courts|Circuit Court]] of the [[Blount County (Ala.)|County of Blount]] and State of Alabama—and although your Petitioner feels that he has been guilty of a great Crime in Killing his best friend under circumstances wholly unjustifiable, for which he deeply mourns, yet your Petitioner feels that he has not been guilty of the offence in the aggravated form of which he is convicted, being so much under the influence of excitement from liquor and other causes as not to be properly conscious of what he was doing at the time he struck the fatal blow. He therefore humbly prays your Excellency to grant him such [[Commuting--Law and legislation|commutation]] of his punishment to that of [[Imprisonment|im=prisonment]] in the State [[Prisons|Penitentiary]] as shall seem right to your Excellency and as in duty bound your Petitioner will ever pray &c. this 1st day of February 1859
[[Weaver, James H.|Jas. H. Weaver]] [[Correctional personnel|Jailor]] of} Georg ^his X mark^ Russel

[[Judges|Judge]] [[Mudd, W. S. (William Swearingen), 1816-1884|Mudd]] will add his certificate that it should be commuted & it <u>clearly</u> should be—[[Pope, B. T.|Pope]]
