Schneider Story

David Atkins was a wealthy slave owner in Jacksonville, AL who was trying to get out of sending a second of his slaves to be impressed by the Confederacy in Mobile. In the letter, he states that the last enslaved person he sent for the effort ended up dying from Measles, and that this has caused great resistance amongst the remaining enslaved people on his plantation due to fear of similar results. Furthermore, he states that the efforts of his slaves would be better spent working for him, and even offers to pay a fee/tax as opposed to actually sending another enslaved person.
