Title
"Senator Burton"
Description
Senator Burton, a colored member of the Texas Legislature, of Fort Bend county, has property valued at ten thousand dollars. He was a slave in Virginia before the war and was taught to read and write by his mistress. Time's wonderful changes reversed the fortunes of the slave and his owner, bringing the mistress to poverty and her former slave to wealth and honorable promotion. Senator Burton accepted the situation by showing his grateful appreciation of the liberality of his mistress in teaching him by supporting her until her death. On the occasion of the marriage of her daughter he sent her a check for $1000. Such an example of gratitude deserves to be known everywhere.
