Bem vindo ao Brasil — Welcome to Brazil

The 2 main biomes in Brazil are the amazon/coastal forest and the dry savannah. Bahia, Brazil is a unique area of the country because it lies in between these biomes. It is truly the best of both worlds! This unique position impacts the people, culture, and food of Bahia in all kinds of ways, but of course the biggest way being the food they consume.

Bahia, Brazil is like an extreme version of New Orleans, Louisiana. The people there just like to party, and they always have a drum beat to move to. Bahia can be described as a melting pot of cultures and cuisines; it specifically has its roots from a variety of African cultures.

Food from Bahia reflects both the aspect of its region as well as the lifestyle of its people. A street food that people love is Acarajé. This little ball of spice is made up of ripe onion, fresh vegetables, and strong spices, all fried to golden perfection to be popped in one’s mouth on the go. Moqueca is a dish that features shrimp, fished off the coastland and sautéed to a crisp, as well as other flavors like parsley and garlic, that all go into a creamy bowl of coconut milk.

If you are looking for something to wash all that down with, Caipirinha is the Bahian cocktail of choice. It includes carefully muddled limes, sweet raw sugar, cold crushed ice, and a couple shots of Cachaça, a type of Brazilian rum that derives straight from sugarcane instead of from molasses.

Whether you want to go to the beach, explore the awesome artwork, or learn some martial arts, Bahia, Brazil has it all. But most importantly, Bahia will not let you leave hungry.
