Below are a handful of reasons explaining why we use this service over others as well as some helpful links to help you get started with Discord.
Discord is widely popular and has been through immense testing and development to get where it is today as a communications app. Find out tips and tricks on how to utilize it by following the link below!
Discord is already outfitted with excellent accessibility options for those who have various types of impairments. These can be outfitted by each person individually, making things much more streamlined in the main chat spaces!
Discord is significantly faster for getting information out to attendees during the conference compared to typical emailing! The ability to shoot a quick notification to specific groups of people makes organizing hybrid conferencing much more manageable! This is where you will receive urgent updates before and during the conference.
We host our conference over Discord, but we link via Zoom to ensure smooth presentations. The chat rooms are open during these conferences for people to converse throughout and discuss as well as to provide a space for them to ask questions after presenters are finished.
On Discord, you have your own unique username and profile, which you’re able to customize to your hearts content. You’re also able to select “roles” for yourself such as your profession, specific field, etc. in order for those around you to quickly identify you how you want.
Discord allows us to provide conference goers with a quick response time to questions regarding anything conference related – meaning less time wasted waiting between emails and a text thread for those who may share similar questions to reference if they have the same ones!
From here you will click “Apply to Join”; answer all questions to get checked in. As long as you’ve already registered, you will gain access to the entire server! If you haven’t, you can still access the Staff Q&A chat.
Before Digitorium, you can use our server for a variety of purposes: questions for the staff about the conference itself, particular rooms, presentations, etc., setting up ride shares with others if you are coming from out of town, getting to know other presenters ahead of time, etc.
During Digitorium, our conference is fully integrated into the Digitorium Discord Server. You will be able to access all conference panels virtually, participate in Q&As afterwards, and engage with your fellow conference members whether they are virtual or in person. This is a great space to catch up with people you meet at the conference over the weekend, set up places to meet and grab a bite to eat, or network with people you want to collaborate with in the future!
After Digitorium, the Discord Server will remain active for a while in case you need to reach out to someone from the conference or on the staff here at the ADHC. Don’t hesitate to inquire about future projects or things going on at the ADHC! We’re happy to help you in your digital humanities journey long after the conference is over.
