University of Alabama President final statement on the Gay Lesbian Alliance

My research uncovered how the University of Alabama’s Gay-Lesbian Alliance survived attempts to defund it through House Bill 454.

The University of Alabama Gay Lesbian Alliance had an active presence for 8 years prior to the defunding legislation, and had overcome legitimacy concerns by the University in 1984. Additionally the University of Alabama Gay Lesbian Alliance made sure to define the group aim specifically within the Sodomy Laws of the State of Alabama, and this entitled the University Administration to bolster the organization's existence. The University of Alabama Gay Lesbian Alliance ultimately secured the endorsement of many leaders and organizations on campus, such as: the University President Roger Sayers; the Student Life Committee; the Student Government Association; professors; The Tuscaloosa Times; and student allies. To conclude, The University of Alabama Gay Lesbian Alliance had no significant change in their ability to function on campus, even after the implementation of House Bill 454.
